Choosing a kettlebell comes down to two decisions: the type (competition or hardstyle) and the weight. Get these right and the bell will serve you for years.
1. Pick the type
- Competition (steel): identical size at every weight — best for kettlebell sport and consistent technique.
- Hardstyle (cast iron): grows with weight, wider handle — great for swings, get-ups and general strength.
2. Pick the weight
As a starting point, many beginners use 12–16 kg (men) or 8–12 kg (women). Ballistic two-arm movements tolerate more weight than overhead work. When in doubt, start lighter and master technique first.
3. Plan your progression
Kettlebell training rewards jumping weights rather than micro-loading. A common home set is three bells spaced roughly 4–8 kg apart so you can scale exercises up and down.
