Competition vs hardstyle kettlebells

Size, material, handle and purpose — what actually changes between the two, and which one fits your training.

Competition and hardstyle kettlebells look similar in a photo but train differently in the hand. The differences are not marketing — they change how the bell sits in the rack, how it loads your grip and how technique transfers as you get stronger.

Size: uniform vs scaling

This is the headline difference. Every competition kettlebell shares the same external dimensions — an 8 kg and a 32 kg have the same ball diameter and height. Your rack position and movement path never change, only the load. A hardstyle bell scales with weight: heavier means physically bigger, which keeps the mass compact but means the feel shifts as you go up.

Material & build

Competition bells are hollow steel from a single casting — no welds, no filler — held to a ±100 g tolerance for a true, consistent weight. Hardstyle bells are single cast iron, powder-coated for durability. Both are one solid piece; neither has anything to rattle loose.

Handle

Competition handle size is nominally 34 mm (actual measurements 33–35 mm depending on axis, as the cross-section is not perfectly circular) — sized for a clean single-hand grip and secure insertion in snatch and jerk. Hardstyle handles are typically 33 mm but step wider on the heaviest bells (40 mm at 28 kg, 38 mm at 32 kg) to handle the load, and their window suits confident two-hand swings.

So which should you buy?

  • Choose competition for kettlebell sport, or if you want identical feel and technique across every weight.
  • Choose hardstyle for general strength & conditioning, swings, get-ups and the best value per kilo.
  • Building a home rack? Many people own both: hardstyle for heavy swings, competition for skilled overhead work.
